Description

For those who aren't aware of this critical moment in the Horus Heresy, the premise of the book is that Horus, warmaster and recent convert to the forces of darkness, has turned his back on his father and the Imperium they built together. Garro’s messenger boy task is replaced with Garro paying for his indecision over the Lord-of-Flies-to-be, while bearing the burden of proving he is not a traitor to the EMPEROR OF MANKIND.

The only reason it did not achieve more was because the novel did not contain more Legions and was slightly shorter than I would have liked. And here we sit, on a ship held together by rust and hope, with intent to dive into that ocean of madness. It’s difficult for Flight of the Eisenstein to have room to tell its own story, as it does crossover a little too much with the previous novels imo - but this is to be expected.Dark and atmospheric, Flight of the Eisenstein also deals with some interesting developments – how do other legions than the Sons of Horus react to the Warmaster’s betrayal? This is the fourth book in the Horus Heresy series, and it takes us away from the characters we have met thus far, perhaps because many of them are now dead.

While the preparations are being made a Thunderhawk carrying Kyril Sindermann, Euphrati Keeler, Mersadie Oliton and Iacton Qruze makes contact and after confirming that they are fellow loyalists Garro allows them on board. I'd been warned that the Horus Heresy series got worse as it went on, and after reading FOTE I suspect it may be true. After receiving a desperate message from a comrade whilst aboard the Eisenstein, Garro witnesses the terrible actions committed by Horus and flees with his men to warn the Emperor of the Warmaster’s treachery. Jonathan Keeble does an outstanding job given the sheer number of imposing voices he has to conjure and never lets interest falter for a moment. The author's focus and development on the changing hero is subtle, sensitive to basic human traits and all connected with substantial action. The lead character, Garro, picks up the mantle of tortured loyalist hero from Garviel Loken and runs with it.

And super Mary Sue takes up too much space in the novel when they should have Reserve some more time Mercity Alton and Sidermen. However, the book itself benefits from having a smaller dramatis personae from Counter’s first novel in the series, or at least once the action reaches the Eisenstein. The trial of the story begins with an opening engagement (seems to be the norm with early HH novels) against the Jargall, a race of bio-mechanical nobodies if I’m honest. Brilliantly written and very engaging, I really enjoyed the inter-play between Garro and his command squad – not to mention the Sisters of Silence.
