There is a split timeline so in the present, Cleo is an author – her book, The Baking Detective, is being adapted into a successful TV series and she’s working on the scripts. As the reader gets to know more about modern-day Cleo, we are also taken back twenty-five years to when Cleo was a university student.

The characterisation is excellent even those who are unlikeable are well portrayed and you gasp at some of the dialogue with the racist and sexist comments that Cleo is on the receiving end of especially in her career. Who is trying to frame Cleo and just why is she pressing self-destruct on a life she is seemingly happy with? But now she has decided to walk away from it all - including divorcing her husband, Wallace - before her past secrets catch up with her. This time it took a few pages in before I could say I enjoyed it but my goodness, literally I could not turn the pages quick enough to see what was going to happen. Both of them love rom-coms and they use this to discuss the guy who was staring hard at Cleo who proves to be Heath Sawyer.I have to admit the start of the book is confusing, you’re thinking how it’s going to play out but also what’s going to happen. Overall, another fab book from the Queen of Thrillers and I’d recommend it to any of her fans or someone looking to try something new in the thriller genre.

They absorbed the nonsense and made me not mind as much if they went off on random tangents that were nothing to do with me.TW: racism, grooming, paedophilia, murder, sexism, misogyny, harassment, mental health, rape ⚠️ This was a really good slow burner that hits you with twists and turns when you least expect it. With very strong and expertly drawn characters I found myself invested in them all the way through, though there were some necessary distasteful ones. A unusual and thrilling tale of long kept secrets and dangerous obsession, combined with a cast of very strong characters. We follow Cleo and Heath, and their friend Trina, through university and beyond and grow to understand Cleo and Heath’s relationship. Overall, it was a really good read and if you like the slow simmering burner style of books then this one is for you. Never one to rest on her laurels, Dorothy Koomson really takes things to another level with My Other Husband. There was a lot of angst and emotion in the writing and you fully felt it all - sometimes I wanted to scream at Cleo and ask her what the hell she was doing.

I loved the alternating timelines that helped build a picture of the complex relationships between the characters over the years but out of all of them I think I loved Lola the most with her witty attitude and sass. This book is a masterclass in perfectly-timed plot reveals, 3D characters and a very clever what-can-possibly-happen-next atmosphere that keeps you turning those pages. It’s something that happens to them because it’s something that happens to Black people just trying to live their lives every day but it’s not the main plot and this is not a book about racism. The twist didn’t make any sense and by the time it was finally revealed I had lost all interest and just wanted to get to the end as quick as possible.
